Tunguska meteorite

On June 30th, 1908, something exploded 8 kilometers high over the river Stony Tunguska, destroying about 2,150 square kilometers of Siberian taiga (forest). Even today, it is not clear whether it was a comet, an asteroid, or something else. This phenomenon is named the “Tunguska meteorite”.

Huge powerful earthquakes after the impact of the unknown space body really shocked the Earth. The seismic wave surrounded the planet twice and it was 2,000 times more powerful than the atomic explosion over Hiroshima. According to calculations of scientists, the TNT equivalent explosion would require more than 50 million tons.

For almost 90 years, the catastrophe was shrouded in mystery. The distance involved, as well as the Revolution of 1917, Civil War and WWII, did not let scientists research the site. Only recently, with the assistance of a space survey, did scientists discover huge damage of the Earth’s surface. Field expeditions also gave positive results. These proved that the fall of pieces of an unknown space body spread out over a huge area of middle Siberia, not only just nearby the town of Vanavara as was considered earlier.

This place is considered a fascinating destination in the Krasnoyarsk region. Scientists, professionals and travelers will particularly enjoy visiting here. You will see with your own eyes what consists of a comet and what kind of damage the earth’s surface might receive after an impact with a space body flying at more than 10 kilometers per second.

Travelers will see mutations of trees, which probably happened because of the high concentration of a space substance on this territory. The mutations appear as many-top trees, many-trunk trees and trees growing parallel to the earth’s surface. You will see how a birch grows from the trunk of a pine, and how absolutely different trees such as birch and pine get together and grow.

A view of broken trees, looking similar to matches and having diameters up to 0.5 meters will impress your imagination. It happened after a blast wave. You will also have the chance to catch a reptile, which is not identified yet in any catalogue in the world.

And much, much more…
