"Stolby" Nature ReserveThree kilometers upriver from Krasnoyarsk on the east bank of the Yenisey River you will find the famous national reserve, Stolby. Its total area is 47,000 hectares, 1,500 of which are used for tourism and excursions. Millions of years of rains and winds created quaint gigantic figures from wild rocks. You will pass by rocks of whimsical forms with names such as Lion Gates, The Old Man, The Miter, Feathers and Takmak. Altogether there are 100 of them; some rocks reach 100 meters in height. The Stolby reserve is famous for its splendid scenery. You will travel on a mountainous road through the boundless taiga forest, enjoy fresh, clean air and try crystal cold water from the springs. The route runs along the valley of a mountainous creek, the Laletina. The scenery is exceptionally picturesque; you will see spring and summer flowers at the same time. The mountainous relief of the reserve, different elevations of the mountains and the number of days of sunshine and soil temperature make this possible. From the observation platforms you will see breathtaking panoramic views: birch tree lace, carved mountain ash leaves, huge larch trees decomposed by shocks of lightning, mighty cedars and beautiful Siberian flowers such as wild marigold, forget-me-not, and fireweed. The Stolby reserve is frequented by all the Russian schools of mountaineering. The history of mountaineering in the reserve began in the middle of the 19th century. The first amateurs climbed the top of the Second Stolby. The reserve also attracts painters who often work in this magnificent nook of the Sayan Mountains.
