Observing tour (continue)

The Cultural and Historical Center (The Museum Center)

An interesting place to go is the Cultural and Historical Center (The Museum Center). This museum houses exhibition of modern art of local as well as internationally recognized artists. 25 years ago it was dedicated to Lenin but after the changes of 90s it was reoriented. Some of the exhibitions of Lenins Museum such as tough life of laborers before the Revolution of 1917 are still in place. But a significant part of the museum is dedicated to soldiers and officers from Krasnoyarsk died in Afganistan and Chechnya. Local photographers present their works too. They change exhibitions all the time a simple phone call would determine what is current.

The Memorial of Victory in Pokrovka.

Being far away from the front line of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) Krasnoyarsk nevertheless played very important role. The Soviet Union lost up to 25 million people so almost every family from the city and region lost somebody. Things related to this war you can see in the Memorial of Victory. During the war Krasnoyarsk had a big hospital, and the soldiers who died there were buried in Krasnoyarsk. Included in the memorial is the Museum of Victory. There you will see exhibits of local participation in war. War plants and factories were relocated from European part of the country to Siberia. Many people were employed in military industries. This represents the second big jump of economic growth since the time when the Trans Siberian Railway was built in the city. Outside of the museum you can see and take pictures of real Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and the “Joseph Stalin”, battle field guns, morters and heavy artillery. The memorial has an eternal flame in honor of those who died and common graves of soldiers who were buried in the city.

The statue of Andrey Dubenski.

Having toured around Krasnoyarsk we will certainly want to stop at the statue of Andrey Dubenski. He was a commander of Cossack’s troops, which reached the tributary of the Kacha River in 1628 (read the details here). They found a military settlement and built a fort on the banks of Kacha and the Yenisey rivers. The site where the statue is the excellent spot to take pictures of down town, Tatyshev Island and Octobers Bridge across the Yenisey.

Surikov’s house-museum.

Vasiliy Surikov was an artist whose works are very famous and very important for Russian culture. He was born in Krasnoyarsk in 1848 and died in 1916 in Moscow. Surikov is best known for his large-scale historical compositions, although he also painted portraits and was fascinated with watercolors. You can learn more about Surikov with a visit to his wooden house where he was born and grew up. He left Krasnoyarsk at the age of 20 to study fine arts in Saint Petersburg. A local businessman Kuznetsov sponsored his trip and studies. When he graduated school he became quickly popular soon. His house-meseum shows the way of life of siberian people in 19th century. With a back yard and bathhouse it shows siberian typical house in old days. He is known for such paintings as "The Morning of the Execution of the Streltsy", "Boyarinya Morozova", "Menshikov in Beryozovo", "The Taking of the Snow Town", "Stepan Razin", "Yermak Conquers Siberia" and "Suvorov Crossing the Alps".

The Surikov’s Art gallery.

More than 7,000 exhibit items including Russian and modern painting, graphics, sculptures, and decorative art are held in the exhibition halls on a regular basis. The canvases of Krasnoyarsk painters have been exhibited in France, Germany, Finland and other countries.

Chair-lift

This is an excellent destination to keep enjoying countryside around Krasnoyarsk. In winter there is steep downhill ski slop but besides skiing people go there year round to reach the nice lookout on the top which a gorgeous view onto “Stolby” Nature Reserve. If for some reason you can’t get to ‘Stolby” Nature Reserve you can certainly take the lift to the high point and enjoy the view of it. This is also an opportunity to view the city.
